OBITUARY Hugo R. Matta January 18, 1944 – September 23, 2018 It is with great sadness that the family of Hugo Matta announces his passing, having lost his battle with pulmonary fibrosis, on Sunday, September 23, 2018, at the age of 74 years. A native of Guatemala, Hugo moved to San Antonio Texas around the age of 8 when his father accepted a position as chief editor for 3 Sunday school publications. He attended Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee and later obtained a degree from St. Phillips College in San Antonio Texas.

Hugo left a legacy of serving Jesus Christ, and for many years he and his father worked side by side in the ministry, founding over 100 churches in his native country of Guatemala. Hugo served in Guatemala as lead pastor for Iglesia de Dios Misionera Central for over approximately 30 years while also working as an interpreter for missionaries in several countries around the globe. He loved every minute of his time in the ministry, including the past 9 years where he volunteered as an Assistant Pastor for El Sendero de la Cruz Church of San Antonio Texas.

He accomplished so many things of which to be proud, but his greatest of pride and joy was found in his beloved family. If his grandchildren are not spoiled, it cannot be blamed on a lack of effort! He is survived by his wife of 47 years Cristina Matta, his daughter Erika Stovall and her husband David, and three grandchildren Natalia, Carson and Luke.

Hugo will also be fondly remembered by siblings: Gilma (Raimundo) Rodriguez, Esli (Christine) Matta, Heri (Barbara Entl) Matta; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and dear friends. Although he will be deeply missed, he leaves behind countless memories to touch the lives of his loved ones forever. The family will receive guests at the funeral home on Friday, September 28, 2018 from 5:00 p.m-8:00 p.m. A Celebration of his life will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Mission Park North Burial Park.
