Ilene’s Obituary Ilene Schutt Landers, 90, of Harwich, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, December 30, 2018. Born January 13, 1928 to Edwin and Alfrieda (Derosie) Schutt in Allentown, PA, Ilene was a longtime resident of Hanover, MA. She married the love of her life, Paul Landers, on October 12, 1949.
Ilene worked in the Hanover School System for many years until she and Paul retired to Cape Cod, where they enjoyed hosting their children and grandchildren at their cottage. Ilene was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband Paul, sisters Helen Gibson of San Jose, CA, Alice Ruginski of Rochester, NH, and grandson Barry Jenkins of Port St. Lucie, FL. Ilene was blessed with a large family who loved her and will cherish her memory.
She is survived by daughters Patricia Brady of Hanover and Nancy Landers of Harwich; grandchildren Melissa Brady, Leanne LaRosa, Shawn Brady, Katelyn Sweeney, Heidi Shadrick, Gretchen Smith, William Jenkins II, Zoe Horan, Emily Rull, and Zia Richard; and great grandchildren Brady Hayward, Austin LaRosa, Finley & Keegan Shadrick, Aiden & Madeleine Jenkins, Henry & Harrison Horan, and Levi Richard. Ilene graduated in 1946 from Rockland High School. She met Paul shortly thereafter and they shared over 54 years of love and bingo until Paul departed this life on April 10, 2004.
Ilene and Paul enjoyed camping on the Cape when their daughters were young, spending days at the beach and evenings at the drive-in. Later in life, they spent many sunny afternoons in their backyard in Harwich, gardening and enjoying retirement. Their many grandchildren fondly remember long summer days swimming and paddle boating around the Landers’ neighborhood pond.
Ilene and Paul frequented the local COA to play bingo and socialize with friends, and enjoyed hours of cribbage at home. In her later years, Ilene enjoyed watching Patriots football, American Ninja Warrior, and sitting outside in her chair on warm days. She always welcomed visits from neighborhood and family dogs who dropped by for a pat on the head.
Her family will remember her as a thrifty individual who lived a modest, but full, life. Mostly, she will be lovingly remembered as Nana. Ilene will be laid to rest at Hanover Center Cemetery in a private burial.
Memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2019, from 11am-12:30pm, with a memorial service at 12:30pm, at the Sullivan Funeral Home, 45 E Water St., Rockland, MA.
