James “Avon” Brown, 91, peacefully passed away on Saturday, September 8, 2018, at his home in New Albany, Indiana. He was born October 27, 1926, in Corydon, Indiana, to the late James Fergus and Geneva (Howard) Brown. He was the oldest son of eleven children born to his parents.

Avon lived in Corydon, Indiana over 59 years and was a 1944 graduate of Corydon Central High School. He attended Cunningham’s Horology School in Corydon and worked as a registered watch maker and jeweler for several years. He enjoyed working and had many jobs in labor and management.

Co-workers always praised him for being fair, kind and hard-working. He was a retired government quality/safety engineer for the Department of the Army at the old Indiana Army Ammunition Plant near Charlestown, Indiana. He was a fan and supporter of New Albany High School Basketball for many years when he was able to attend.

He enjoyed watching all sports on television and spending time with his grandchildren. He loved people and he never met a stranger. He knew Jesus Christ was his Lord and Savior and he was ready to go home.

He was loved and will be missed by his family and friends. Avon was preceded in death by his parents; his oldest son, Roger Brown; three brothers, Ronald Brown, Archie Brown, and Larry Brown (Lena); and three sisters, Effie White, Lucy Brown and Beverly Exum (Cecil). He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Marion (Alexander) Brown; his son, Ricky Brown (Pamela) of New Albany, Indiana; his daughter, Rosalyn Brown of New Albany, Indiana; his four sisters, Shirley Rogester of New Albany, Indiana, Deborah White (Charles) of San Diego, California, Maxine Brown of Corydon, Indiana and Alease Rowe of Indianapolis, Indiana; four grandchildren; Dale Harris, Jr. (Patricia) of Clarksville, Indiana, Bethany Harris (Jerry Evans) of New Albany, Indiana, Erick Brown (Amy) of Maryland Heights, Missouri, and Erica Brown (fiancé Mike Naeger) of Florissant, Missouri; and six great-grandchildren, Breanna Michl, Avon and Levi Brown, Gavin and Jacob Evans and Halo Harris.

A special thanks to Alison Davis (MD2U), Marcia, Susan and everyone at VNA, Lifespan Transportation, First Urology, Dr. Rez (Norton Cancer Institute) and all who lifted him up in prayers during his illness. Avon’s request for cremation and burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery in Corydon, Indiana will be honored. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Beanblossom-Cesar Funeral Home in Corydon, Indiana has been entrusted with the arrangements.
