James C. Brough, 85 of Valley Road, Schellsburg, passed away on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at his second home, Rest Assured in Meyersdale, he was surrounded by many that also became like a second family to him. Jim had a long courageous battle of over 13 years with dementia, but remained his kind, caring self until the very end. Jim was born June 17, 1932 in St. Michael, PA.
He was the son of the late William and Grace (McIntyre) Brough. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Robert as well as a sister, Marlene Lohman. Helsel, Jr. Jim had four grandchildren, Matthew Brough and fiancée Darcy Checkeye, Tyler Brough married to Krista (Miller), Nathaniel Helsel, and Sarah Helsel, as well as two soon-to-be great grandchildren, Chandra and Kameron.
Jim was a 1950 graduate of Adams Township, now Forest Hills High School. He was a Sergeant in the United States Army, serving his country during the Korean War. Jim was a 1957 graduate of the Pennsylvania State University, home of his most cherished Nittany Lions, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Vocational Education.
He later returned to PSU to earn his Masters Degree in Counseling Education. Jim also earned a Masters Degree as a Reading Specialist from the University of Arizona. Jim retired after 35+ years from the Chestnut Ridge School District, during much of his employment he served as a Guidance Counselor.
Mr. Brough touched the lives of all those he came in contact with and would strike up a conversation with anyone he met. Jim lived his life to the fullest and made certain to give back where he could, including volunteering for the YMCA in Honolulu, HI, again meeting so many and touching the lives of others. Because Jim’s outlook on life, the family would ask that you not cry over their loss but shed a tear of joy in knowing such a remarkable son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, teacher, mentor and friend.
A Funeral Service will be held at Chestnut Ridge Independent Fellowship Church, New Paris at 11:00 AM on Monday, May 21st, 2018 with Pastor Dan Oldham officiating.
