James Eugene “Gene” Smith James Eugene “Gene” Smith, 51, of Balsam Grove, passed away on Friday, April 27, 2018 at his sisters home after he courageously fought a battle with a lengthy illness. Born in Buncombe County on June 7, 1966 to Robert Charles Smith. He was preceded in death by his mother, Viola Lunsford Smith.

Gene was a very hard worker. He enjoyed listening to pop music. He loved his family especially his great nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father, survivors include his brothers, Allen Smith and wife Lana of Silversteen and Bobby Smith of Hendersonville, sister, Rhonda Lekan and husband Eric of Balsam Grove, nieces, Amanda Smith, Brandy Hall and Nicole Isaacs, nephews, Cody Lance and David Smith, 5 great nieces and 1 great nephew. A private family memorial service will be held. Moody-Connolly Life Celebrations is caring for the family.
