OBITUARY James L. Gilbow October 24, 1924 – July 12, 2018 James was born October 24, 1924 to Harmon Cook Gilbow in Clay County, Texas to Harmon Cook Gilbow and Esther Williams Gilbow. He attended Henrietta schools and graduated from high school, May 1941. In December of 1942, James enlisted in the US Navy, and was assigned to duty on Battleship USS Tennessee for 3 years.

During war, he saw action capturing Japanese South Pacific Islands (Siapan, Guam, Philippine Islands, Iwo Jima, Tarawa and Okinawa. James also engaged with Japanese Naval fleet in Suriago straits in 1944 and hit by a Kamikaze suicide plane that damaged the starboard side and killed a large number of men. After repairs, it included with a number of other US Naval ships to witness General Douglas Mcarthur accepting Japanese surrender aboard USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay in 1945.

After which, James returned to the states at the end of war and was honorably discharged on January 1, 1946. James graduated from SMU with a BBA degree in 1951. He was employed by Oilwell Division of U.S. Steel and retired after 35 years.

He went on the honor flight to Washington, D.C. on May 24, 2010. James is preceded in death by his parents and wife Clara, brothers: Harmon Cook Gilbow Jr. and William (Bill) E. Gilbow. He is survived by son, Jimmy Gilbow and companion Betsy Hemmingson of Richardson and good friend and companion Dottie Travis of Sunnyvale and sister Lois Lescovitz of Carrollton.

A Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 17th from 6-8 pm, with a Funeral Service on Wednesday, July 18th at 10am with a 1pm burial at DFW National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charity of your choice.
