James Sewell Standfield March 28, 1935 – December 13, 2018 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card James Sewell Standfield, 83, known by most as “Sewell,” transitioned on December 13, 2018 at SOVAH Health, in Danville, VA . Born March 28, 1935, he was the eldest son of the late James Standifield and Minerva Jeffress Standfield. Sewell left home as a young adult, first settling in Washington, DC, then relocated to Philadelphia, PA, then to Newburgh, NY, where he resided with his family.
He was employed at Ford Motor where he expanded his automotive expertise. Sewell loved good music; especially the sound of the guitar. He’d often put on his favorite music and commence to doing the “George Jefferson,” asking anyone around him to join him for a dance.
He was such a jovial young man. He also had a special love for gospel music, would sometimes even shed a tear when listening to it. He truly loved the Lord, and no matter how sick he was, he was always talking about how thankful, blessed and grateful he was.
Sewell relocated back to Milton, NC in the 1980’s, and later moved to Danville, VA. Although he had accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior at a very young age, he rededicated his life to the Lord and became an active member of Greater Brandon Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as President of the usher board. He set high standards as the leader of this ministry, and those who served under his leadership were expected to meet those standards in order to be highly respected doorkeepers in the house of the Lord.
In fact, usher boards from other churches would often call him for advice. In fact, he was always available to offer words of wisdom and practical advice to others. .
Although he would often add a little humor, he always kept it real. Sewell leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Rose Standfield, whom he married in 1994; four children from his previous marriage: Tony Standfield (Wanda) of Danville, VA, James Stanfield, Jr. (Janet) of Poughkeepsie,NY, Vicki S. Robinson-Haynes (Eric) of Capitol Heights, MD, Valerie Stanfield-Holmes (Melvin) of Waldorf, MD; and one stepson, James Hill. His step-daughter, Theresa Hill-Parker, preceded him in death.
He was blessed with 17 grandchildren, Keith Saunders, Cherilyn Standfield, James Stanfield III, Tony Standfield, Jr., Waymon Robinson, Jr. (Tasia) Jade Jackson, Victor Robinson, Trey Robinson, Terran Hill, Leonard Parker, Edmond Parker, Tyresha Parker, James M. Hill, Jasmine Hill, Dennis Hill, Marcus Hill, Anthony Hill; 27 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, all of whom he was very close to, Mary Flora (Earl) of Montclair, NJ; Floyd Standfield (Juanita) of Milton, NC; Doris Hughes (Woodrow) of Newark, NJ; ArthurStandfield (the late Lula Mae) of Milton, NC; Lou Ella Robinson of Broomall, PA and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who loved him dearly.
