Janez (John) Zupan, age 88, died at home on October 10, 2018. He was born in Jesenice, Slovenia, on February 14, 1930. In search of freedom, Janez left his enslaved homeland, communist Yugoslavia, and came by way of Austria to the United States.

He went first to Rochester, New York, and then to Columbus, Ohio. He retired from Chemical Abstracts Service after 31 years as a Senior Scientific Information analyst. Janez was preceded in death by his beloved son, Dr. Andrew Zupan; his sisters, Ljudmila (Milka) Sustar and Vera Lapajne; sisters-in-law Majda Zupan, Nikolina Mocnik, Judita Mocnik and Sandra Mocnik; and brothers-in-law Dolfi Mocnik, Silvo Mocnik, Vlado Mocnik, Peter Sustar and Lojze Stare.

He is survived by his loving wife, Dr. Maria (Mara Mocnik); son, Dr. Mark Zupan (Dr. Mary Gail Mercurio); daughter-in-law, Lori Zupan; former daughter-in-law, Dr. Carol Shuherk; five grandchildren, William, Walker, Sydney, Matthew and Caroline; brothers Joze Zupan, Riko Zupan (Marija); and many dear nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews in Canada, Italy and Slovenia. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at a later date. Donations in his memory may be made to St. Timothy Church or School, Ohio Health Hospice, or a charity of your choice.
