Jay W. Gardin, age 88, of Marion, passed away Monday, December 31, 2018 at his home following a period of declining health. Jay was born in Marion on September 18, 1930 to the late Arthur W. Gardin and Vernie Biggerstaff Gardin. He served his country honorably in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War.

Jay will be mostly remembered as the owner of the West Marion Barber Shop but his love for the Martial Arts led him to found the Gardin School of Tae Kwon Do where he was instrumental in passing on his expertise in the art. As much as he enjoyed his work, his love for his family was his driving force and he liked nothing better than the time he spent in the company of his loved ones. He was an avid gardener, and as a young man he liked to fish and hunt.

He will be missed by all who knew him. In addition to his parents, a brother, Jack Gardin, and a sister, Lucille Gardin, preceded him in death. Surviving are his beloved wife of 60 years, Mary Ann Suttles Gardin; a daughter, Cathy Cornett of Marion; his brother, Jerry Gardin and wife Debbie of Glenwood; two granddaughters, Summer Calloway and husband Kelly and Jordan McMahan and husband Justin; and two great-granddaughters, Kallie and Cora Calloway.

A graveside service will take place Thursday, January 3, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at McDowell Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills at PO Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043.
