Virginia Young Greene, age 102, of Marion, passed away on Sunday, February 24, 2019 at Autumn Care of Marion. Virginia was born in McDowell County on October 4, 1916 to the late Lloyd S. Young and Blanche Wall Young. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Marion where she was a Sunday school teacher for 54 years.

She worked with her husband for many years at Greene Enterprises, and was a receptionist at the senior center. She was not only a volunteer with Meals on Wheels, but also the Coordinator of the volunteers. Virginia lived a long and adventurous life, full of giving.

Just to name a few, her accolades include senior citizen of the year, grand marshal of the Christmas parade, first recipient of the McDowell County special service award in 2007, for her outstanding personal involvement and significant contributions to the well-being and development of citizens for McDowell County. Preceding her in passing is her husband Robert P. Greene of 41 years. Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Larry Greene and wife Brenda of Marion, and Craig Greene and wife Martha of Millers Creek; and a sister, Mary Ellen Stroud of Florence, SC; six grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a slew of nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, February 28, 2019 at First Baptist Church in Marion from 2:00 to 3:00 pm. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 pm with Rev. Dr. Scott Hagaman officiating.

Flowers are appreciated, however, memorials can be made to First Baptist Church at 99 N. Main Street, Marion NC 28752, or to Meals on Wheels at 100 Spaulding Rd, Marion NC 28752.
