Jean’s Obituary Mrs. Jean Cowan, Age 80, of Sandersville, died Sunday, January 14, 2019, following an extended illness. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 26 at Bethany Baptist Church, 1132 Harts Ford Road in Tennille at 3:00 PM. Visitation will be held before the service at the Church at 2:00.

Brant Kennedy will be officiating with Betty Jones, Cindy Ward and Teresa Moore sharing memories of Jean. The family will be residing at the home of Melton Jones, 2979 Mt. Gilead Road in Tennille.

Jean was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, the daughter of the late George Averett Holmes, Sr. and the late DeVera Stanley Holmes. The family moved to Sandersville when Jean was four where she attended Sandersville Elementary and graduated from Sandersville High School in 1956. Jean continued her education at Georgia Southern and graduated with a B.S. from the University of Georgia.

She taught speech in the Washington County Public School system and then moved to Macon continuing her career in speech therapy, before moving to Birmingham, Alabama. There, she was one of 4 speech therapists in Jefferson County and was awarded Teacher of the Year while servicing five different schools in the county. After retiring from the Birmingham School system, she resided in Norfolk, Virginia to be close to her son, Mike and his family, who were stationed at Norfolk Navy Base.

When her son and family moved to Illinois, she resided there with them for some years and then came to Sandersville where she resumed her career as a speech therapist in the Public and Private Schools. Due to declining heath, Jean spent her last years at Tennille Retirement Home where she experienced a loving and wonderful family atmosphere and excellent care with the caregivers and staff Teresa Moore; Administrator and Cindy Ward; Activities Director, until her death. Jean was an expert seamstress, making many of her own clothes.

She loved quilting, reading, puzzles, word search books, going to movies, eating out, family and friends, and she never met a stranger. Jean is survived by her son Mike (Shanna); grandsons Aiden and Slade of Belleville; Ill, granddaughter Kimberly Cowan Brower (Austin) of Odeningfield, Alabama; grandson Alex Cowan of Montgomery, Alabama; great- grandchildren, Cody and Alaynna Kilgore of Odeningfield, Alabama; brother, George Holmes, Jr. (Charmaine) of Miami Florida; sisters, Betty Holmes Jones (Melton) of Tennille; Barbara Holmes Mooney of Atlanta (Jim deceased) and brother in law, Dennis Smith of Athens. She is predeceased by her sister Margaret Holmes Smith.

Donations can be made to Teresa Moore or to Cindy Ward for the Tennille Retirement Activities Fund, 525 North Main St, Tennille, Ga. 31089 in her memory. Special thanks to her Health Care Providers, Layne Kitchens, N.P, the staff at Washington County Internal Medicine, University Home Health Care system, Tennille Retirement Home staff and to Pruitt Hospice Service for the special care and love she received.
