Jean’s Obituary Rye, NH – Jean Fletcher, 90 , of Rye, passed away on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 at Evolve Memory Care in Rye, NH, her home for the last 5 years. She was born on October 4, 1928 and grew up in Liberty, Maine, the daughter of Willis and Ruth Ladd. Growing up a farm girl, Jean loved animals.

She worked hard on the farm alongside her brother Willis and sister Priscilla. Jean played basketball at Walker High School in Liberty, where she graduated in 1945. Back then the game was only half court.

Being short, there was no “dunking” for certain but fun times with her classmates, many of whom she would see at high school reunions every so many years. After high school, Jean and her sister, Priscilla moved to Kittery Point, Maine and resided with an Aunt and Uncle while looking for work. Jean found work on the assembly line at the G.E. Plant in Somersworth, NH.

Jean attended services at The First Baptist Church of Kittery Point, ME. That was like a missing piece of “home”. Jean met her future husband, Alvin on a youth group roller-skating outing.

Alvin revealed to his children a sweet memory about that night. He saw Jean with her shiny brown waves, dark brown eyes and that smile. He skated toward her and gently bumped the toe of her skates with his…he was smitten!

Alvin and Jean dated for some time and then were married on June 5, 1955 in a double wedding with her sister, Priscilla and her husband Tom Brinker. Alvin and Jean moved into their home on Foyes Lane. Jean had many skills aside from being an amazing mother and wife.

Some of her talents included sewing, wallpapering, braiding wool rugs, baking, painting, restoring furniture, caning chairs, and gardening. Jean loved babies and would babysit children at her house. She was drawn to children and taught many years of Sunday School classes and Vacation Bible School at the First Baptist Church in Kittery Point.

Jean became a deaconess of the church and also sang in the church choir. So many have loved Jean Fletcher and she loved right back. When it came to Jean, helping others was the rule, not the exception.

She was one in a million to us. She always put the needs of others before her own. Jean was pre-deceased by her husband, Alvin Fletcher.

She is survived by her son, Darel Fletcher and his wife Barbara of New Castle, NH; daughter Karen O’Hearn and her husband David of Exeter, NH, daughter Sue Hickey of Newmarket, NH, six grandchildren, Adam Sturtevant, Shawn O’Hearn, Christopher Fletcher, Andrew Fletcher, Tyler Hickey, Ashley Hickey and one great grandchild, Noah O’Hearn. Services : A visiting hour will be held at the J S Pelkey and Son Funeral Home, 125 Old Post Rd, Kittery, ME, on Feb 23, 2019, from 1 – 2 pm with a memorial service following at 2 pm.
