Jeffrey A. Callahan June 28, 1952 – January 29, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers View/Sign Guest Book| Send Sympathy Card Jeffrey Alfred Callahan born June 28, 1952 in Jersey City, New Jersey, passed away suddenly on January 29, 2019 at age 66. He was the son of the late Robert and Marie Callahan of Forked River, NJ. He is survived by his wife Susan E. Fitzgerald of Reading, MA, his three children Christopher, Katherine, and Matthew of Reading, MA, his brother Peter Callahan and his wife Virginia of Richmond, Texas.

Brother-in-law of Paul Fitzgerald of Stoneham, MA, Lisa Fitzgerald and David Swartz of Newton, MA, and Maria Fitzgerald and Mark Mester of Isle of Palms, South Carolina, and Uncle to many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by several cousins. Jeff graduated Glasboro State College in 1974 then went on to receive his Master’s Degree and the Doctorate in Education from Northeastern University in 1987.

His first position out of college was at the Bancroft School in Pennsylvania, a non-profit school for individuals with brain injuries and intellectual disabilities. He then went on to work in a higher education administration position at a small college in western Pennsylvania. In the early 1980’s he moved to Boston to take an administrative position at Berkley College of Music while pursuing his Doctorate of Education at Northeastern University.

Upon receiving his doctorate degree, he took the position of Director of Student Affairs at the MGH Institute of Health Professions. After getting married and following the birth of his three children in 1993, he resigned from formal positions and became a full-time stay-at-home Dad. Jeff was also a substitute student teacher in Reading schools for 13 years.

Among his hobbies were reading, classic cars, boating, being the ultimate home handyman, cooking, gardening, watching local sports and enjoying his dogs. Jeff was an incredibly devoted father and husband. Jeff’s Funeral will be held on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at the Church of the Good Shepherd 95 Woburn St. (corner of Chute St.) Reading at 11:00AM.

Burial is private. Visiting hours will be held Friday, February 1, 2019 at the Douglass, Edgerley and Bessom Funeral Home 25 Sanborn St. (corner of Woburn St.) Reading from 4:00-8:00PM. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in Jeffrey’s memory to American Cancer Society 30 Speen St. Framingham, MA 01701, the American Heart Assoc.
