Jim R. Van Matre, age 80 of rural Darlington, WI passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, September 5, 2018 at Meriter Hospital in Madison, WI. He was born September 2, 1938 the son of Horace and Avis (Steiner) Van Matre. Jim graduated from Darlington High School in 1957.

He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Sylvia M. Amenda on July 20, 1957 in Monroe, WI. Jim lived in rural Darlington his entire life where he and Sylvia farmed in Willow Springs Township for over 50 years. Jim is survived by his children: John (Susan) Van Matre of Darlington, Michelle (Bugs) Eaton and Cindy (Kenny) Weiskircher both of rural Shullsburg, WI; six grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Sylvia in 2016; one brother: Donald Van Matre; one sister: Iona Loken; two brothers-in-law: LaVerne Loken and Rudy Geissbuhler and one sister-in-law: Roseanne Van Matre. Jim was a member of Fayette United Methodist Church in rural Darlington.

He served in the United States Army where he was stationed in Germany until he was honorably discharged in 1959. He was a past member of Darlington Jaycees, Fayette Sportsmans Club, and Fayette Snow-Goers. Jim enjoyed bowling for “the Spot” and riding horses as he was also a member of Darlington Saddle Club.

He cherished the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren creating memories they will all remember forever. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. at Fayette United Methodist Church (11013 County Highway F, Darlington) with Rev. Angela Utter officiating.

Burial will be in Fayette Cemetery. A visitation will be held Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 10:00 A.M. until 10:45 A.M. at the church. The Erickson Funeral Home in Darlington is serving the family.
