Joan F Rider , December 31, 1941 — June 20, 2018

Joan F. Rider age 95 of Sturgis, Michigan passed away Wednesday evening June 20, 2018 at her home. She was born June 18, 1923 in Constantine, Michigan one of nine children to Roy and Florence (Raifsnider) Preston. Joan resided most of her life in Sturgis.

On December 31, 1941 she married Bobby F. Rider in Adrian, Michigan and was happily married until his death July 17, 1978. Joan was a devoted homemaker, mother and grandmother. She was a member of the First… Read More » United Methodist Church in Sturgis.

She enjoyed playing bridge with the girls, knitting and crossword puzzles. She was a loyal fan of the Detroit Tigers and Detroit Pistons and could usually be found watching all their televised games. Joan had hobbies and interests but what she truly loved was time spent with family and rocking her cat Bubba on her lap.

She is survived by her two daughters: Karen (Al) St. Germain of Sturgis and Shirley (Richard) Kay of Plano, Texas; daughter-in-law: Diana Oberdick of Florida; one granddaughter: Angela (Lee) Bentley of Florida; two grandsons: Philip St. Germain and Joshua (Jennifer) St. Germain both of Sturgis; two great grandchildren: Paeslii and Sutter St. Germain both of Sturgis and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; one son Roy Rider; infant daughter: Barbara Ann Rider; five sisters: Mary Large, Margaret Trowbridge, Katherine Leister, Cora May Lambert and Bette VanZant and three brothers: Roy, Mark and James Preston. In accordance with her wishes cremation has taken place.

The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 P.M. Sunday, July 1, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church, Kimball Chapel where a memorial service celebrating the life of Joan F. Rider will begin at 3:00 P.M. Sunday. The Rev. Jeanne Garza will officiate.

Private burial of the ashes will take place at Oak Lawn Cemetery in Sturgis at a later date. The Hackman Chapel of Hackman Family Funeral Homes, 114 S. Nottawa St., Sturgis, MI 49091, 269-651-2331 is entrusted with the arrangements. The family suggests those wishing to make a memorial donation in Mrs. Rider’s memory consider the First United Methodist Church, 200 Pleasant Ave.
