Joan M. Hays February 24, 1925 – January 06, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries Born in Brooklyn, NY to Russell and Lydia MacFall, Joan resided as a child in Fair Lawn (Radburn section, which she spoke of often and fondly) and Ridgewood. A 1942 graduate of Ridgewood High School, Joan attended St. Lawrence College and Columbia University. She was married for 59 years to Edwin W. Hays, until his death in 2007, and had resided in Paramus from 1949 until her death.

She is survived by her three children, Susan Barnes of Medford, NJ, Betsy Gatti (John) of Wayne, NJ and Don Hays (Janet) of Paramus, NJ. Joan was the proud grandmother of five: Lisa Luehmann (Alan), Jonathan Barnes (Patricia), Michele Lamboy (Sergio), Allison Clark (Duane), Donald W. Hays (Danielle). She also has six great-grandchildren: Vanessa Jimenez (John), Joshua Luehmann, Michael Clark, Benjamin Clark, Crimson Hays and Jacqueline Barnes, as well as two step-grandsons (John and Casey Gatti) and eight step-great-grandchildren (John, David, Hailey, Ava, Paige, Carlie, Gabriel and Alexander Gatti).

A woman of many and varied interests, Joan painted, gardened, followed politics, researched her family’s genealogy, collected antiques, was an avid reader and wrote a privately produced historical memoir, “George Washington Never Slept Here” about her family and the historic houses they occupied since 1950. She greatly enjoyed the company of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and looked forward to their visits. Joan died peacefully at home.

A memorial service will be held at Van Emburgh Funeral Home in Ridgewood, NJ, Saturday, January 26 from 2-4 p.m. Cremation was private. Interment will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery, VA, alongside her late husband, a decorated WWII veteran and Ex-POW. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to one of the following charities: All-Humane Rescue 781 Ringwood Ave, Wanaque, NJ 07465, National Military Family Association, 3601 Eisenhower Ave.
