Obituary of Joan Foley Joan Margaret Woodruff Smith Foley September 24, 1933-January 16, 2019 Clermont, FL Formally of Town of Highlands, NY Joan Margaret Woodruff Smith Foley passed away peacefully with her family by her side on January 16, 2019 in Clermont, FL. Joan was born in Cornwall, NY on September 24, 1933 to the late William R. and Mary Ellen Fitzgerald Woodruff. She attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and graduated from Highland Falls High School in 1951.

She was a long time resident of the Town of Highlands raising her family in Fort Montgomery with her husband, the late Howard H. Smith. Joan was a proud employee of the U.S. Postal Service retiring after 23 years achieving the position of Postmaster of the Bear Mountain Post Office for over a decade. Family and friends were Joan’s passion and delight.

Upon her retirement she moved to Florida and enjoyed volunteering at local schools tutoring children in reading and traveling with friends. She is survived by her sisters and brothers-in-law Jane and Neil Tosolini, and Ann and Patrick Kearney; her children: Gail S. Reynolds (Markus), Brenda J. Baker, Howard R. Smith (Linda), Bradley H. Smith, stepsons, Lawrence J. Foley Jr. (Debby) and Thomas M. Foley (Marta). Grandchildren: Petey Baker, Kristy Castro, Keith & Todd Reynolds, Sheri Guerrette, Markus Reynolds, Allison, Patrick, Bradley, Megan, Jonathan and Carolyn Smith, Bryan, Brett, Brooke, Joey and Kanani Foley.

Great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Haley, Vincent and Rylee Castro, Rylan and Carson Baker, James and Lily Reynolds and several nieces and nephews including her special niece and namesake, Nancy Joan Hannigan. Joan was predeceased by her loving husband, Lawrence J. Foley, Sr., her brothers Robert, Donald, Kenneth and Henry Woodruff, her sister Gloria W. Hannigan, and her son Roger H. Smith. Our family would like to acknowledge the compassionate care and kindness provided by the amazing caregivers at Crane’s View Lodge in Clermont, FL and thank the nurses from Cornerstone Hospice especially Terri Zamarron.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, February 2nd at Blessed Sacrament Chapel in Fort Montgomery followed by interment in Peacedale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to Cornerstone Hospice, 2445 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778.
