Born in Lynchburg, Virginia she was the daughter of Saint Bernard and Ruth May Rucker. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Samuel L. Ashwell and her sister, Carolyn Parker.

Joanna was the mother of four, the grandmother of ten and the “GiGi” of five, soon to be six. She loved all things in life but enjoyed her family, art and music the most. She was a skilled artist, who taught watercolor classes at the local university and created historical collages of Lynchburg Virginia, Springfield Illinois and Fernandina Beach Florida to name a few.

She was also a skilled pianist who studied under the famous Miss Emma Adams of Lynchburg, Virginia. She could play anything by ear. You always knew when she was really happy because she would sit down and just start playing the piano.

She is survived by her children, Steven T. Ashwell (Drue), Laurie A. French (Burt), Bonnie A. Mechtel (Frank), Amy A. Cardenas (Marlon), brother-in-law Leroy Parker, sister-in-law Betty Arthur and many many nephews, nieces, cousins, grands and great-grands. She will be missed by all, but all rejoice in the knowledge that she has now gone home to live in the presence and merciful grace of our Heavenly Father.
