John E. Dahl, age 71, of Freedom, formerly of Marion, passed away unexpectedly on October 28, 2018. John was born on July 21, 1947, son of Chester and Adeline Dahl of Bowler. He spent his childhood on the family dairy farm in Bowler.

After graduation he attended Antigo Teachers College to begin his educational career. He continued his education with a Bachelors from UW-Stevens Point and a Master Degree from UW-Oshkosh. He married, Mary Voelker on August 11, 1973 and they were blessed with 45 years of marriage.

John was a teacher for the Marion school district his entire professional career, serving in various capacities from principal, teacher, and basketball coach. Upon retirement, “Scooter John” could be found riding his “hog”, supporting the Wisconsin Badgers, visiting many friends, golfing local courses, and he especially enjoyed Rock Steady Boxing in Green Bay. As a retired teacher, his commitment to education never stopped as documented in his endless years of volunteering at Freedom elementary school in various 3rd grade classrooms working with students and grading papers even on the weekends.

John will be missed by his wife and his two children: Laurie (Kevin) Moseng; Eric (Kelly) Dahl; and two loving grandsons Ayden and Myles; by his sister Nancy (Jim) Grimm and sister-in-law Marilyn Dahl and multiple nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Chester Sr. and Adeline Dahl, and his older brother Chester Dahl, Jr. A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 1, 2018, at the Verkuilen-Van Deurzen Family Funeral Home Freedom Location, N3972 Columbia Ave. , Freedom.

Family and friends may gather at the funeral home from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in the name of John Dahl. The Dahl family would like to thank the Freedom first responders and fire department, Gold Cross Ambulance plus all the great friends that were with the family during this crisis, and Pastor Levi for performing the service.
