HOLYOKE John E. McHugh Jr., 55, of Holyoke, passed away suddenly on Sunday, March 10, 2019 at his home. He was born in Albany, son of the late Dr. John E. and Anne (Hearn) McHugh and graduated from Holyoke High School and Assumption College in Worcester. John retired about five years ago after a long career with the Department of Transitional Assistance for the Commonwealth, and was a communicant of Our Lady of the Cross Parish in Holyoke.

He was an avid fly fisherman, something he did often with his Dad, and they took great trips over the years to fly fish. John also tied his own flies. Post retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his friends and often walking around the Reservoir in Holyoke.

Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Peter M. McHugh, in 2015. John is survived by two sisters: Kathryn McHugh and her husband Shawn Luther and Elizabeth McHugh Meyer and her husband Ed; a niece Emily Margaret McHugh, and nephews Aidan Peter McHugh, Brenden Russell Meyer and Miles John Luther, as well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Relatives and friends are asked to gather at Our Lady of the Cross Parish Church, Holy Cross Avenue in Holyoke for John’s Mass of Christian Burial on Tuesday, March 19th at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Saint Jerome Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held Monday, March 18th from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Barry J. Farrell Funeral Home, 2049 Northampton Street. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the John and Anne McHugh Scholarship Fund at Holyoke Community College.
