John Gomez Jr., 93, of Hingham, a professional engineer, died December 4, 2018. Mr. Gomez was born and raised on a farm in Little Compton, Rhode Island, and lived with his late wife, Marilyn Brown Gomez, and family, in Hingham since 1957. He enlisted in the Navy at 17 and served from 1943 to 1946, working, primarily, with radar.

He attended the University of Rhode Island, on the G.I. Bill, and graduated fourth in his class in civil engineering. It was there that he met his wife. He, later, earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of New York.

Mr. Gomez worked, most of his life, for New England Telephone Company. After he retired, he consulted as a professional engineer and nursed his wife in her final illness. He enjoyed fishing, growing tomatoes and roses, and camping at Baxter State Park (Maine), and on Martha’s Vineyard (Massachusetts).

He really enjoyed visiting with family and friends, and is survived by his two sons, Peter B. Gomez and John W. Gomez, his daughters-in-law, Judy Gomez and Elaine Gomez, and his grandchildren, Elizabeth Gomez, David Gomez, Ann Gomez Lawlor, and her husband Ken Lawlor, all of Hingham. He was the oldest of four children born to Helen Brown Gomez and John Gomez of Little Compton, Rhode Island. He is survived by his brother and his wife, Donald and Judy Gomez, his sister, Suzanne Gomez Eolin, and many beloved nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews, of Rhode Island and of New Hampshire.

He loved family, God, and country. He was brave and compassionate and worked hard all his life. He was unfailingly polite and will be remembered for his graciousness.

He was thrifty yet generous to others. He was known for his hospitality and his unwavering enthusiasm for New England-boats, seafood, and Christmas. He was very proud of his family and always enjoyed a good story.

He had a good sense of humor. He was a small man with a good and gentle disposition, a brilliant mind, and he cast a long shadow of benevolence. A memorial service will be held on January 12th, at 11 o’clock, at First Parish of Hingham (Old Ship Church), 90 Main Street.

Interment will be private, and Mr. Gomez will be buried at High Street cemetery in Hingham. Donations, in memory of Mr. Gomez, may be made to the American Cancer Society.
