John’s Obituary John Gruba, 73, of Pierre, died Thursday, January 24, 2019 at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. A celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date. John was born March 4, 1945 in Waubay, SD to Harry and Mary (Sichmiller) Gruba.

He grew up in Grenville, SD and attended Day County Schools. He joined the National Guard in 1963. John was united in marriage to Peggy Mandal on March 10, 1972 in Bowman, ND.

They had one son, Spencer. John was currently retired from a 30 year career as a custodian that started in Mott, ND with the Mott School District and ended in Pierre, SD with the Pierre School District. He rode saddle bronc in the PRCA for several years and was active with the Buckhorn Rodeo Association.

He enjoyed woodworking and refinishing old wooden furniture. John is survived by his son Spencer and his wife Sheila of Mott, ND; grandchildren: Jonathon and Aubrey Gruba of Pierre, Joey and Aaron Urhlab of Seattle, WA; great-grandchild, Riot, of Pierre; sisters, Terry Sobin of Los Angeles, CA, Debbie Haas of Aberdeen, SD, Judy Gabor of Brentford, SD, Susan Harty of Roslyn, SD and Marion Mortenson of Rapid City , SD; brothers, Larry Gruba of Rapid City, SD, Chuck Gruba of Rapid City, SD and Harry Gruba of Grenville, SD. He was preceded in death by his wife Peggy, his parents Harry and Mary, sister Linda Larson and brothers David Gruba and Adam Gruba.
