Bernardston—–John J. Gibowicz, 97, of South St. died Tuesday (4-24-18) after a short illness and failing health. He was born in Greenfield June 11, 1920 the son of Alexander and Anna (Misiun) Gibowicz. John attended Greenfield Schools .

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps. John was a gunner on the B-17 Flying Fortress during WWII. He participated in the Air Offensive in Europe, Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland Ardennes C Europe.

John received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal GO 16 Hqs 95th Bomb GO 44 and the Distinguished Unit Badge WD GO 79 44 2. , John was a fueler for Pier 66, a subsidiary of Phillips Petroleum in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for many years. He retired in 1977 and moved to Cumming, Georgia.

In 1989, John and his wife moved back to Greenfield before finally settling in Bernardston in 1992. He enjoyed nature, the outdoors, gardening and walking. John was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Greenfield.

Among his survivors is his wife the former Elizabeth Vollinger, several nieces and nephews including Robert Gibowicz and his wife Tessie of East Longmeadow and Joe Gibbs of Boca Raton, FL. He also leaves his good friend and neighbor Paul Parda of Bernardston. Besides his parents John was predeceased by his first wife the former Mary Radovich, his brothers Charles, Harold and Walter and his sisters Isabel Gibson, Anne Shea and Helen Melnik.

Services will be Friday (4-27-18) at 11 AM at Kostanski Funeral Home 220 Federal St. Greenfield. Burial will follow in Mater Dolorosa Cemetery. A calling hour will be from 10 AM until the service time.
