Obituary for John Kormendi John M. Kormendi was born December 28, 1942 in Milwaukee, WI to Frank and Dorothy (nee Torgerson) Kormendi. John went to his forever home on Friday, October 12, 2018 at the young age of 75. By the grace of God, his grandchildren were able to say their goodbye’s Thursday night.
Friday, his daughter, Kim spent time with her Dad, then said her peace before exiting the room, while his loving wife, Monica remained by his side for his last breath. John was an all-around incredible man. He served in the US Airforce and had a great work ethic!
He provided a great life for his family. John always made time to attend his daughter’s school & sporting events. Later in life he enjoyed doing the same for his grandchildren, Matthew and Ella, whom he cherished dearly.
Family was John’s top priory. In fact, some will even admit that John was more of a father-figure to them than their own dad. One of John’s favorite pastimes was hunting the Northwoods with the guys.
During some of those excursions, he bagged some nice deer. During one conversation with his daughter, he admitted that just seeing the beauty of nature close up was enough for him, but she knew he enjoyed his aged blackberry brandy and comradery too! Other fond memories were made up north at Lake Nancy during family reunions.
John got to enjoy one final trip to Rhinelander. Although the weather was unseasonably cold for August, everyone there made the best of the week & had a great time reminiscing and making new memories! John had talent!
He built a boat while in high school. As a result, his family spent many weekends skiing and having fun. His love for water followed him throughout his years.
John sure enjoyed swimming and fishing when time permitted. He would spend DAYS getting his fishing gear together, just to spend a few hours of quality time with family or friends. Those who knew John, knew he was a perfectionist when it came to most things!
His yard was always groomed and meticulous. His vehicles were serviced properly and detailed. His tools and sporting equipment were cleaned after every use and looked like ‘brand new’ despite their age.
John’s appearance was always top notch too! He was such a good looking guy with the best head of hair and most infectious smile! He was witty and sure enjoyed kidding around with people.
(John’s grandson has picked up on that trait). Even when his dementia was in the beginning stages, John could catch himself saying something that didn’t quite make sense and he would quickly respond with, “Well, it must be the dementia talking”. John was content with the simple pleaures in life, such as hitting the casino with his wife, playing cards with neighbors or just talking over endless cups of coffee (and sweets)!
If you knew John, count your blessings! He was a unique individual with love in his heart for everyone he knew. While we will miss him dearly, we are at peace knowing that he is with Jesus and will continue to make sure we are okay here on earth.
John is survived by his wife of 48 years, Monica F. Kormendi (nee Netto), his only daughter, Kimberly (Steven) Gonzales, his grandchildren, Matthew J and Ella R, sisters Bonnie Behrend, Joan Lund and Beth (Bill) Steck, cousins, nieces, nephews and lifelong friends. He was preceeded in death by his parents. A Military Honors service will be held at 10:00AM on Friday, October 19, 2018 at Southern Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery (21731 Spring St., Union Grove, WI 53182) with entombment following.
