Obituary for John Mason Gissell Jr John Mason Gissell Jr., 69, of Charleston, SC, died July 16, 2018. John was born July 01, 1949 in Charleston, 1968 graduate of Bishop High School. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Elizabeth Grissell.
He is survived by his son John (Jack) III, of Mt. Pleasant, SC, a daughter Sara of Summerville, SC, His Brothers David and Steve (Nina), and Sister Annette Seignious (John) all of Charleston, SC. John spent most of his life living in Charleston and enjoyed time spent with his family.
He started his career as a tradesman working in many fields of construction. While starting his career, John attended college in the field engineering and was very close to obtaining his degree; however, obligations prevented him from completing his studies. Later in life he changed his career and got into the hospitality business and was one of the former proprietor’s of “Big John’s” Tavern in downtown Charleston, a popular favorite among locals.
He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and shooting. He will be remembered as a man who lived and loved life and will be sadly missed by many. Friends and Family are invited to attend a visitation for John on Thursday July 19, 2018 form 6-8 PM at Charleston Cremation Center & Funeral Home, located at 2054 Wambaw Creek Road, Charleston, SC 29492.
