John Phelps Fruit, 83, of Spartanburg, SC, died Friday, February 1, 2019 at Spartanburg Medical Center. Born February 27, 1935 in Chattanooga, TN, he was the son of the late Edgar William and Annie Elizabeth Nance Fruit. A U.S. Air Force veteran, Mr. Fruit was a graduate of The University of South Carolina, and was an Accountant for over 40 years.

John was a member of First Presbyterian Church, past president of The Jaycees, and a member of The Sertoma Club of Spartanburg. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Mary Ann Alford Fruit of the home; daughters, Elizabeth “Millie” Fruit Johnson (Christopher) of Columbia, SC and Catherine “Katie” Fruit Hanczaryk (Brian) of Durham, NC; four grandchildren, Curry Wofford Johnson, Evin Catherine Johnson, John Paul Hanczaryk and Cooper William Hanczaryk; along with several nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He was also predeceased by a brother, Edgar William Fruit, Jr. A memorial service will be at 2:00 PM Tuesday, February 5, 2019 at the Chapel of First Presbyterian Church, 393 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302, conducted by The Rev.
