Jose Adducul Bassig known by family as “Pepe”, passed away at age 70 on Sunday, October 7, 2018. He was born in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan Valley, Philippines to Alfonso L. Bassig Sr. and Felipa Adducul on December 16, 1947. He graduated from the University of the East in Manila, Philippines with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration in 1971.
He started his career as a parts dealer of International Harvester Ltd. a supplier of agricultural equipment. He also managed a family business involving freight and delivery services in the Philippines. In 1987, the family moved to Bellevue, Washington from the Philippines.
He began working for the Boeing Company supporting the Boeing Commercial Airplane Group in Everett in 1989. He retired from Boeing 737 Commercial Airplane program on December 16, 2016 which was his 69th birthday after being in the company for 27 years. Jose loved to cook for family and friends.
His favorite dishes include traditional Filipino cuisine like Pinakbet (a vegetable dish originating in Northern islands of the Philippines) and beef steak. Many people thought he had a super green thumb when it came to growing plants. After he retired, he created a vegetable and fruit garden which included blue berries, raspberries, grapes, black berries, plums, persimmons, eggplant, tomatoes, pepper, okra, potatoes, green beans and a variety of herbs.
He also grew flowers and a selection of plants and trees to add to his collection. He even built a green house to protect some of his plants to survive the Seattle winter. He was also an avid tool collector and a frequent visitor at Lowes or Home Depot.
His few projects after he retired included replacing the fencing around the house, building and upgrading his green house and two sheds, and planters for his plants. Jose also invested time in fixing cars as a hobby. He would frequently volunteer to replace the breaks of vehicles in the family.
By the sound of the car, he could tell what was wrong with it. As a form of relaxation, he would play Christian hymnals in his guitar. Jose’s dream was to become a lawyer.
But his parents insisted that he study to become a doctor. He tried it for a year, but ended up changing his course to Business Administration to help with the family business instead. But of course that was just an excuse.
He was survived by his wife Frida (married for 45 years), two children – Michelle and Raquelle, son-in-law – John, and grandson – Jeremy. Jose’s family is literally part of the Boeing Company family. His wife Frida also retired from Boeing and presently his daughter Raquelle and son-in-law John works for Boeing.
Michelle is a lawyer, a dream fulfilled for Jose by representation. He might not have become a lawyer, but he was a proud notary public. Jose was also survived by his siblings – Jimmy Bassig, Janette B. Chua, Corazon B. Soriano, Celia B. Maguigad, Alfonso Bassig Jr., Anthony Bassig, Marites Bassig and Neil Bassig.
He was always very generous and sympathetic toward others, worked cautiously because he hated rework, always roots for the underdog and had a very active imagination. He was well loved by many and always had a smile on his face regardless of the circumstance. Jose’s Favorite Bible Verses: Praise for the LORD’s Mercies A Psalm of David.
103 Bless the LORD, O my soul; And all that is within me, bless His holy name! 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: 3 Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, 4 Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, 5 Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s. 6 The LORD executes righteousness And justice for all who are oppressed.
7 He made known His ways to Moses, His acts to the children of Israel. 8 The LORD is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy. 9 He will not always strive with us, Nor will He keep His anger forever.
10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins, Nor punished us according to our iniquities. 11 For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; 12 As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father pities his children, So the LORD pities those who fear Him.
14 For He [a]knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. 15 As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. 16 For the wind passes over it, and it is [b]gone, And its place remembers it no more.
17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting On those who fear Him, And His righteousness to children’s children, 18 To such as keep His covenant, And to those who remember His commandments to do them. 19 The LORD has established His throne in heaven, And His kingdom rules over all. 20 Bless the LORD, you His angels, Who excel in strength, who do His word, Heeding the voice of His word.
21 Bless the LORD, all you His hosts, You [c]ministers of His, who do His pleasure. 22 Bless the LORD, all His works, In all places of His dominion. Bless the LORD, O my soul!
