Joseph Hoover, known to his friends and close associates as “Joe,” passed away Friday, February 8th, 2019, at the age of 75 years. Joe was born and raised in Heavener, Oklahoma where he actively played sports including his most loved sport, football. He attended college in Wilburton, Oklahoma and attended Southwestern, in Weatherford, Oklahoma where he completed pharmacy school and attained a Dr. of Pharmacy in 1968.

It was during his time in Weatherford he met his lovely bride to be, Montie Thomason, also a student at Southwestern, who received a Master’s in English Education. Joe and his family moved to Stigler, OK in 1968 where he worked alongside Harlan Shields at a drugstore on the corner of Main Street and Broadway. After a fire destroyed the building, Joe opened Hoover Drug where it remained a Stigler landmark until he retired.

Joe stayed involved in his local community serving as a Chamber of Commerce board member, a local Jaycee member and chapter president. He was recognized as Jaycee of the Year in Oklahoma in 1973. Joe also served on the Oklahoma Pharmaceutical Association advocating for patients and independent retail druggists throughout Oklahoma.

Joe was also a member of the Masonic Lodge where he contributed to local newsletters, provided pictures and through the help of others drew attention to local charities and scholarship programs sponsored by the Masons. Known for his stories, humor and of course, his love for OU football, he traveled extensively to watch the Sooners play not only in Norman but several bowl games, including a national championship win in the 2001 Orange Bowl against Florida State. Photography was also a hobby Joe adopted and was awed by the splendid majesty of the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Park.

Jackson Hole was his favorite place to visit with its breathtaking scenery, natural wildlife and great locals and tourists alike. He is survived by his wife of over 50+ years, Montie, and son Ken as well as his sister Laveene Cooper and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members. We take great comfort in knowing that Joe is now with his brother, Lee, running defensive schemes to help guide the Sooners next season and his mother Lona Queen Hoover who was taken early in her life.

She was surely proud of the man Joe became. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Cornerstone Funeral Home Chapel, 1830 N. York Street in Muskogee, OK on February 13th, 2019 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you please make a donation to the charity of your choice in the name of a loved one in your family.
