Mr. Joseph A. Garza, 92, died at his home on May 16, 2019. There will be a memorial service at First Presbyterian Church, 302 W. Church St, Champaign on Wednesday, May 22 at 11am. Burial will immediately follow at Danville National Cemetery, and military rites will be accorded.

Owens Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Mr. Garza was born on October 19, 1926 at Laredo, TX. He married Mary Ruth Barber on June 15, 1952 in Knoxville, TN.

She preceded him in death in Feb. 2018. Survivors include 2 sons; Roger (Specioza) A. Garza and Thomas D. Garza, both of Champaign; along with 3 grandchildren, Mary Garza, Esther Garza and Joseph Garza and a stepgranddaughter, Sharon Nabyolola.

He was a long time financial planner administrator at the University of Illinois. For 32 years he worked in different capacities at the University; and in 1984 retired as securities investments accountant for the U of I and the U of I Foundation. Mr. Garza was a WWII Army Veteran; enlisting in 1943.

He served 6 years and received Asiatic Pacific campaign, WWII Victory and Army of Occupation Japan 1945, medals. He was an alumnus of Oklahoma State University and a University of IL Accountancy and Management graduate.
