Obituary for Joseph “Joe” Smith Joseph Lowell Smith, 79, of Battle Creek, passed away Friday, September 28, 2018 at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He was born April 24, 1939 in Battle Creek, the son of Lowell and Ada (Budd) Smith. He married Mary Hall on July 30, 1957 in Battle Creek.

Joe worked as a millwright for 20 plus years and was a member of the Millwrights Local 1102 and 2252 and the American Legion Post 175 in Saranac, MI. Joe also owned and operated Joe’s Place in Saranac, MI since 1987. He was the biggest John Wayne fan, loved watching westerns, and playing Keno.

Joe even decorated his bar in Saranac with all of his John Wayne memorabilia. He is survived by his wife, Mary Smith; children, Kathy Hamilton, Mike (Sharon) Smith, and Marcie (Kara) Miller; brother, Paul Smith; 8 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his step-father who raised him, Robert Schoder; and brothers, Duane Sult and Rick Forman.

Visitation will be held at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service on Tuesday from 6:00-8:00 PM. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 AM at Bachman Hebble Funeral Service. Burial will be at the Bedford Cemetery in Bedford Township, MI.
