Obituary for Joseph Olivero, Jr. Joseph Olivero Aiken, SC – Joseph Olivero, Jr. entered into rest on Saturday, May 28, 2018 in Aiken, South Carolina. Joseph was born to the late Joseph J. Olivero, Sr. and Aracelia Fernandez Olivero on January 15, 1932, in Catano, Puerto Rico. At the age of three, he and his family moved to Brooklyn, New York.
He married Bobbie H. Olivero and had two sons, Derek S. Olivero and Shawn G. Olivero. He was a member of the Armed Forces during peace time and never forgot how much he loved his country. Joseph graduated from Brooklyn College earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English, and a Master of Fine Arts Degree in Speech and Theater.
He was Director of the Puerto Rican Theater Group. He started his professional career with the New York City Board of Education teaching at Benjamin Cardozo Junior High School. In the evenings, he was a Lecturer at Kingsborough Community College in the Speech and Theater Department.
He attended Brooklyn Law School earning his Juris Doctor Degree and was President of the Puerto Rican Law Students Association. After graduating from Brooklyn Law School, he was appointed Assistant District Attorney in the Special Narcotics Courts of the City of New York, on the staff of Robert M. Morgenthau, District Attorney of the County of New York. He was admitted and qualified to practice as an Attorney and Counselor in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York, as well in the United States District Court for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York.
After retiring from the District Attorney’s Office, he was admitted to membership in the New York State Defenders Association and entered into private practice. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Shawn G. Olivero, and sister, Carmen O. Arena. He is survived by his son, Derek S. Olivero of Brooklyn, New York; his grandson, Marc J. Olivero of Farmingdale, New York; sister, Olga O. Damone of Holiday, Florida; brother, Jack J. Olivero and his wife Miriam of New York, New York; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Joseph had a deep abiding love for his God, his country, family, and friends. He loved the theater, arts, and dancing. The family wishes to thank all the employees and caregivers at Harbor Chase Assisted Living and Tide Water Hospice in Aiken, South Carolina, for their loving and tender care and treating Joseph with the dignity and respect that he so richly deserved.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Church of the Most Holy Trinity, 720 Telfair St, Augusta, GA 30901. The funeral Mass will be Thursday, May 31, 2018 at 12:15 P.M. at The Church of the Most Holy Trinity with Fr. Jacek Szuster celebrant.
