Joseph’s Obituary Joseph Powell “Gunner” Cahill, 76 of Plover, Wisconsin, passed away suddenly January 10, 2019 at his home. Joseph was born in Marshall, Missouri, on December 24, 1942 to the late Joseph Edward and Marjorie (nee Powell) Cahill. He graduated from Marshall High School in 1960 and answered the call to serve in the United States Navy shortly thereafter, reporting to recruit Training Command Great Lakes in Illinois that June.
He graduated with Company 151 in September, 1960, as a Fire Control Technician. During his time in the Navy, Joseph served on four different ships. The USS Hancock (CV/CVA-19) as a Petty Officer Third Class, the USS Cochrane (DDG-21), where he achieved the rank of Petty Officer First Class.
While serving at the Naval Development and Training Center in San Diego, California he received his Associate’s Degree in Business from Grossmont College where he was also the student body president, graduating in 1972. He was then stationed aboard the USS Lynde McCormick (DDG-8) and earned the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer. His final Station aboard a ship was the USS Ranger (CV-61) with his last rank being Chief Warrant Officer 2 (E9).
He then retired and was honorably discharged from the Navy on July 31, 1980. During his service career he received the National Defense Service Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal and the Good Conduct Award. Joseph enjoyed a post-Navy career as Application Engineer, working for companies including Lovejoy, JVC and Square D. He furthered his education by obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree from Concordia University in 2001.
He became Post Commander of the 8th District in Wisconsin as well as Chairman of Youth, Education and Citizenship Committee for the VFW Post 10262 in Plover, WI. He took pride in planning events for charity such as the Wounded Warrior Project. One to never retire, he continued his love of education by substitute teaching within the Stevens Point Area School District.
Joseph loved to watch his Chicago Bears and Blackhawks; win or lose. He was an avid fisherman and golfer. He was also a wonderful dancer.
He is survived by his wife Patricia (nee Cieslewicz); two children from a previous marriage Heather (Travis) Harnisch, and his son Sean Cahill; his sister Brenda Miller; two granddaughters, Emma and Eryn as well as several nieces and nephews. He is further survived by stepchildren Jill (Perry) Stewart and Mark (Amy) Petersen and four step grandchildren, Ashley, Mitchell, Ryan and Sophia. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday January 16, 2019, at the Pisarski Community Funeral Home 2911 Plover Road Plover, WI.
Pastor Dave Ficken will officiate the service. Visitation on Wednesday from 9:00am until time of service at the Plover funeral home. Full military honors will follow the service, with burial taking place at the Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery in King, WI.
