Obituary of Joseph Mungavin Joseph J. Mungavin, Jr., 87, of Walton passed away Wednesday evening, January 2, 2019 at Catskill Regional Medical Center of Harris, NY. Joseph was born on June 14, 1931 in Dobbs Ferry, NY, the son of the late Joseph J. and Grace (Pulver) Mungavin. He spent his childhood in Hastings-on-Hudson where he graduated from Hastings High School.
He was a loving father, raising eight children over the course of four decades. He is survived by three daughters: Deborah Mungavin (Nicholas Kourabas) of Mahopac, NY, Sharon (Tom) Maxwell of Cheyenne, WY and Julia (Jed) Stumpf of Mission Viejo, CA, and four sons: Douglas Mungavin of El Paso, TX, Kyle (Vicky) Mungavin of Poughkeepsie, NY, Brian Mungavin of Philadelphia, PA and Craig Mungavin of Brooklyn, NY, eleven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, his very special friend Lucy Wood, several nieces, nephews and many friends. Joseph was predeceased by his son, Joseph Mungavin III and his sister, Audrey Gonder.
Joseph was a devoted member of the First Reformed Church in Hastings and of the New Hackensack Reformed Church in Wappingers Falls, where he served on the Consistory. In more recent years he attended services at the Christian Apostolic Church in Fayetteville, NY, led by Brother Frank Giuliano and at New Hope Community Church, led by Pastor Larry Light. He encouraged religious education for his children and emphasized the importance of a well rounded education.
Joseph was an avid reader and learner, earning Bachelor’s Degrees from Marymount College in business and psychology, awarded in 1978. Joseph proudly served his country in the US Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a systems analyst in the field of computers for most of his career, and taught computer science as an adjunct professor at Iona College.
Additionally, Joseph volunteered as a Scout leader, church bookkeeper and therapeutic horseback riding assistant. Throughout his life, Joseph was enthusiastic about a wide range of interests. He was both a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader, leading Troop 56 on many adventures and guiding two of his sons to achieve the rank of Eagle Scout.
Joseph appreciated the beauty of nature, enjoyed gardening and cared for many pets and wild birds over the course of his lifetime. During retirement, Joseph’s love of music, dance and theater blossomed. He sang with the Depot Lane Singers, performed with a Cobleskill clogging group and with community theater groups in East Worcester and Oneonta, played the dulcimer, participated regularly in western square dancing, line dancing and country ballroom dancing.
He also enjoyed tennis, bowling, jogging, painting, drawing, writing and storytelling and taking trips with the Tri-County Seniors. In the last decades of his life Joseph made many new friends that filled his days with laughter and light. All who knew and loved him will miss the brightness and enthusiasm he brought into our lives.
Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday afternoon, January 9, 2018 from 2 to 4 pm at Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend Street, Walton, where a prayer service will be held at 4 PM. Burial will be on Thursday, January 10, 2018 at Mount Hope Cemetery, Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, with full military honors. On Friday, January 11, from 4 to 8pm there will be a Celebration of Life at the Sons of Italy, 884 Rt.
376, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590 where remembrances will be shared at 6PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the New Hope Community Church, 45 Stockton Ave. , Walton, NY 13856.
