OBITUARY JOY L SPECK December 7, 1923 – January 29, 2019 Joy Lee Savage Speck passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 95 on Tuesday, January 29, 2019. She was born at home December 7, 1923 in Port Neches, Texas, the third child of Ward Kelly Savage and Syble nee Woodruff. She was preceded in death by her parents, her older sister Birdie Donn Savage, brother Ward Kelly Savage Jr. and her husband of 73 years Dr. Norman Thomas Speck, who called her “Hobby” as she was deserving of all of his time and affection.
As a child she attended First Baptist Church of Port Neches and after her marriage on August 31, 1946 she attended the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Houston. She was a graduate of Port Neches High School where she was a majorette in the marching band. She then attended and graduated from Texas Women’s University with a BS in Library Science.
Later in life, she audited enough courses at Rice University to have received an MS in Art, and served as an Art Historian working with Dominique de Menil at the Rice University Museum. Joy was a lifetime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She is survived by her five sons Pat Kelly Speck MD, Don Thomas Speck DDS, Mark Lee Speck DDS (Sherry), Eric Johannes Speck and Norman Kirk Speck DDS (Paula), nine grandchildren Charles Norman Speck, Derek Alexander Speck, Dylan Savage Speck, Evan Pierce Speck, Travis Shane Speck, Rachel Joy Speck DDS, Shannon Collins Matthews, Sarah Emma Speck, Hannah Mary Speck, three great grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and extended family members.
Her loves were her children, art-of-all-kinds, travel and the Braeswood Garden Club. She said “I have 5 only-sons” as each one thought they were deserving of all of her time and attention and she made them feel that way. She traveled the world with family and friends.
Braeswood Garden Club recently honored her donation of a decade of scrapbooks that memorialized the Club’s history, which are now housed in the Texas Room of the Houston Public Library. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday February 3, 2019 from 1:00 – 2:00pm in the Chapel of Angels at Forest Park Lawndale followed by a grave-side internment service officiated by Rev. McClanahan of First Evangelical Lutheran Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Alzheimer’s Association or the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Houston. Attendees are invited to a reception following the internment at the Speck family home.
