OBITUARY Joyce McCowen Johnson April 4, 1931 – July 25, 2018 Joyce McCowen Johnson, 87, passed away on Wednesday, July 25, 2018. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 29, 2018 at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. John Kinser officiating.

Burial will be private for family only in Riverside Cemetery. The family will greet friends on Saturday, July 28, 2018 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Gables Clubhouse, 5228 Forsyth Road, Macon. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to First Presbyterian Church, 682 Mulberry Street, Macon, 31201 or the Cannonball House, 856 Mulberry Street Macon, 31201.

Joyce was born in Macon on April 4, 1931 to the late James Clifford McCowen, Jr. and Alma Vissage McCowen. She was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years on July 28, 2017, Milton I. Johnson, Jr. M.D. and daughter, Joy Johnson Lynn who passed away August 12, 1988, and former son-in-law, James Keener Lynn. Joyce was a homemaker and a member of First Presbyterian Church.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. Joyce attended A. L. Miller High School and in 1946 she was the captain of the winning company for the Miller-Lanier Exhibition. In 1948, she was named captain of the company Miller-Lanier Exhibition and an honor graduate; Superlative Senior Class A. L. Miller High School.

On March 19, 1949, Joyce married the love of her life, Milton I. Johnson, Jr. In 1959, Joyce served as President of the Dames Club, for the Medical College of Georgia. In 1966 and for several years, she was a member of the Museum of Arts & Sciences Guild. In 1970, Joyce was President of the Auxiliary to the Bibb County Medical Society and served as the Secretary to the Auxiliary to the Medical Association of Georgia in 1982.

She was an active member of the Sewing Club since 1972. Joyce was active in the House and Garden Club, serving during the 1980s as President, Secretary and two terms as Treasurer. Beginning in 1996, she served for two years as the President of the Sidney Lanier Chapter #25, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the year before served as Secretary.

Joyce served until 2012 on the Board of the Friends of the Cannonball House. During her time at the Cannonball House she served four years as Social Chairman. Joyce joined the History Club in 1987 and served 2 years as President beginning in 2007.

She also served as secretary and treasurer. Joyce gave at least three papers during her active years in the club. In 2008, she became a member of the Mary Hammond Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Barbara Johnson Price and her husband, James Craig Price of Big Canoe, Georgia and Nancy Johnson Long and her husband, Edward Larry Long, Jr. of Macon; grandsons, Edward Larry Long, III, M.D. and his wife, Elizabeth Claire Long of Greenville, SC and Alexander Stephens Long, II of Atlanta; brother, James Clifford McCowen III and his wife, Suzanne Lasch McCowen of Greensboro, NC; brother-in-law, William Freeman Johnson and his wife LaShon Herring Johnson, of Hickory, NC; cousins, Suzanne McCowen McCullough, Albert Irvin McCowen, Jr. and his wife Betty of Orlando, FL; David Swails McCowen and his wife Mary of Atlanta; Houston Vissage of Mount Dora, FL and Jeff Egan and his wife Gayle Vissage Egan of Brunswick, GA, and several nieces and nephews.
