Obituary for Julius Watzich Julius Watzich, age 98, died on Sunday, September 16, 2018 at his Middleburg home. He was born June 17, 1920, a child of the depression, in West New York, New Jersey. He spent his childhood in Hudson Heights located on top of the Palisades overlooking New York City.

Jules graduated from Purdue University, class of 1942, with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering. He then joined the US Navy. He was a brilliant young engineer who played a critical role developing an antisubmarine detonation system during World War II.

He also spearheaded a major post-war defense project; development of the first air to air guided missile system. Jules professional career evolved into a leading role as Program Manager for the design and construction of Atlanta’s commuter train transportation system known as MARTA. Amongst other key projects in his accomplished career, he oversaw the design and construction of the US Senate underground subway system at the Capital building.

At the age of 89, Jules starred in a locally filmed and produced horror movie ‘Maxwell Stein”, released in 2009. As a member of the Middleburg Players, he played roles in “Oliver”, “Guys and Dolls”, “Three Men on a Horse”, “Working”, “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Our Town”. Jules was the beloved husband for more than 60 years to his wife Shirley who died September 26, 2015.

He had a sister Ruth and is the loving and devoted father of Chris; Dianne, spouse Michael; Wendy, spouse Darryl; Brock, spouse Paula. And the very proud grandfather of Lauren and Kyle Watzich. A celebration service of Jules life will be held Saturday, 2:00 pm, October 6, 2018 at The Church of the Redeemer, Aldie Va; reception immediately following the service at the church.
