Obituary for Keith George Tonkin On Saturday, July 14th 2018, Keith Tonkin, loving husband and father passed away at the age of 63 after a short battle with cancer. Keith was born on September 19th, 1954 in Detroit, Michigan to George and Edynne (Edy) Tonkin. He received a degree in Chemical Engineering from Michigan Tech in 1980 and worked as a chemical engineer throughout the South for over 30 years.

Keith had an inquisitive mind and a passion for knowledge. As a youngster he worked furiously for weeks to find “the end of the numbers” and would take apart and reassemble mechanical devices. By the time he was in high school he was building his own radios and telescopes.

A small explosion while trying to make a miniature “atom smasher” in the basement put an end to some of his fun. In the late 90’s Keith moved to Charlotte, North Carolina and vowed he would never leave because of the warmth and sincerity of it’s residents. Keith was a giver who loved to give the people closest to him things that they would love and treasure.

His infectious laughter, warm smile, and gentle touch will be missed by all who knew him. Keith is survived by his wife Lindy, young son KJ, and many other friends and family members. Visitation for Keith will be held at Heritage Funeral Home Indian Trail Chapel on Thursday, July 19 th from 1:00PM – 2:00PM with a Service of Remembrance at 2:00PM.
