Obituary for Kenneth “Kenny” Wetzel Kenneth R ‘Kenny’ Wetzel, 81 of Abilene passed away on November 26, 2018. He was born on January 26, 1937 in Abilene, Kansas, the son of Raymond and Vivian (Thomas) Wetzel. He graduated from Dickinson County High School in 1955.

Out of high school, Kenny worked at Viola’s Grocery Store in Abilene where he met Orrene Condit and the two were united in marriage on July 12, 1959. Kenny served in the Army National Guard for 6 years. He worked for Martin Funeral Home for 6 years and then spent the next 25 years working at Smith Heating & Plumbing, where he eventually became part owner.

After selling the business, Kenny spent the final 16 years working for USD 435 as the Building and Grounds Supervisor. He retired in 2005 and then immediately went to work for Russell Stover Candies, where he spent the next 12 years in Grounds Maintenance. Kenny’s life will be carried on through his wife of 59 years, Orrene; sons Kurt Wetzel (Sandy) of Shawnee and Keith Wetzel (Angie) of Topeka; five grandchildren; Sarah, Emma, Zach, Bethany, and Allison; sisters Karen Timm (Ron) and Shirley Anguiano (Steve) of Abilene; in addition to several nieces and nephews.

Kenny was involved in several civic organizations over the years serving as a member of the Lions Club since 1982, Trustee of the Brown Memorial Foundation, a member of the Abilene Cemetery Board for 30 years, with the last 10 years as President. He was also a member of the Gideons International and served for 25 years as Chief of the Grant Township Fire Department. .

Kenny chose to give his life to Christ in 1970 and was a member of Emmanuel Church where he faithfully served the Lord and others on numerous committees for over 50 years. After committing his life to Christ, Kenny desired to serve others with his time and talents and to be a wonderful husband and father. He will be remembered for his ever present smile, his quick wit, and his ability to always make people feel at ease.

Funeral services for Kenny will be at 10:30 am, on Friday, November 30 at Emmanuel Church in Abilene with Pastor Gordon McClure officiating. Burial will follow at the Abilene City Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 29, from 6:00-9:00 pm at Emmanuel Church.

The family suggests memorials be given to the Emmanuel Church Building Fund or to the Home Health and Hospice of Dickinson County.
