Kennie Denmon, Jr. was born on December 29, 1943. He was preceded in death by his parents, Kennie Denmon, Sr. and Lillie Mae Taylor and a brother, James Cubit. Kennie received Christ at the age of nine and he participated in the Pentecostal faith throughout his lifetime.

Early on, he attended his father’s church. He later attended the church of his brother, Bishop Herman Cubit. Kennie was educated in the Kansas City School System, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1962.

He then attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas for two years. He played football and basketball while at Bethany. He was the first black quarterback in Bethany’s history.

After college, Kennie began working for KCPL, (Kansas City Power & Light) as a Custodian. He progressed to Meter Reader and, subsequently, he became KCPL’s first Right of Way Agent. He retired front that department after working at KCPL for thirty-eight years.

Kennie was an avid golfer. He participated in many tournaments on the black golfer circuit. These tournaments were sponsored by Black Golf Clubs in Topeka, Omaha, Oklahoma City, Dallas and Wichita.

Kennie was a member of the Kansas and Heart of America Golf Clubs. He was also a member of the Kansas City Golf Association. Kennie married his high school sweetheart, Betty Shumate in 1964.

This union lasted for nineteen years. He then married Shirley Ann (O’Neal) Denmon in 1985. Shirley had a son, Timothy Lamar O’Neal who passed away in 2014.

Kennie Denmon, Jr. leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of thirty-three years, Shirley Denmon; his children: Kennie Denmon, III (Libra), Kurt Jeffery Denmon (Jennifer), Kristen Dianne Hurst (Byron, Sr.), Kent Brian Denmon (Karen), and Cassandra Dorsey; grandchildren: Timeka Lee O’Neal, Chanse Aerius Trenton Denmon, Bryon Hurst, II, Major, Marshall, and Maison Denmon; his brother, Bishop Herman Cubit; his sister, Wanda Denmon; a host of in-laws, nieces and nephews; extended family: Kenneth J. Ellis, Sr., Pamela Staten-Ellis, Marissa N. Ellis, Kenneth J. Ellis, II and Jaysen K. Ellis. Memorial Service for Kennie Denmon, Jr. will be held Saturday, July 21, 2:00 p.m. at the Watkins Heritage Chapel, 4000 Emanuel Cleaver II Blvd. Private Disposition.
