Lafayette “Lafe” Rayburn, 83, of North Vernon, passed away at 9:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2019, at his residence. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 28, 2019, at Sawyer-Pickett Funeral & Cremation Services. Rev.

Dale Boyd will officiate. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Born March 25, 1935, in North Vernon, Lafe was the son of Eugene and Marie (McGloughlan) Rayburn. He married Esther Hauersperger on September 5, 1953. She preceded him in death on January 22, 1995.

He had retired from Muscatatuck State Developmental Center as a mechanic. Lafe was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, K of C, Coffee Creek Conservation Club and had been a previous volunteer for Hospice. He loved golf, NASCAR, the Pacers, and the Reds.

Lafe is survived by four sons, Robert (Debbie) Rayburn of Brookfield, WI, Jeff (Pam) Rayburn of Seymour, Scott (Marie) Rayburn of North Vernon and John (Kelly) Rayburn of Noblesville; a daughter, Connie Rayburn of North Vernon; a special friend, Faye Engle; and seven grandchildren, Matthew (Erin) Rayburn, Christopher (Erin) Rayburn, Andrew Rayburn, Derek Rayburn, Eli Rayburn, Karson Gerling and Devon Rayburn. He was preceded in death by his parents and wife; three brothers, Eugene “Frog”, Robert and Phil Rayburn; and a sister, Joan Goins. Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the American Cancer Society or Our Hospice of Jennings County.
