Lawrence E. Best age 93 of Conneaut died Sunday, December 30, 2018 at the Ashtabula County Nursing Home. Larry was born on July 29, 1925 in Toledo, Ohio the son of Elmer Jacob and Angeline (Gildone) Best. He was a 1943 graduate of Rowe High School and then worked at his family’s Greenhouse.
Larry then went on to serve as a Paratrooper in the 11TH Airborne Division in the United States Army. He deployed as a member of the occupying force in Japan and was honorably discharged in 1946. Larry was a member of Corpus Christi Parish and attended mass at St. Mary Church.
He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus where he served as Secretary Treasurer. Larry was an outstanding target shooter. He was a member of the Amboy Rifle Club and served as its treasurer.
He served on the C.L.Y.O. Committee Board and was Station 4 member. Larry enjoyed spending time with his large family and friends Larry was preceded in death by his parents, brothers James Best, Wilbert Best, Charles Best and sisters Ruth D’Ambra and Marcella Kennedy.
He is survived by his wife Sandra Jean (Sanford) Best, whom he married November 15, 1952, sons Philip and Debra Best of Rock Hill, SC, Michael and Lori Best of Washington, IL, Lawrence Best of Conneaut, Christopher and Sandra Best of Charlotte, NC, daughters Robin and Doug Williams of Conneaut, Debbi and Ken Covell of Dublin, OH, Pamela and Mike Scott of Summerville, SC, Cathy and Gary Diemer of Conneaut, Natalie and Wes Boroski of Conneaut, brothers Robert and Donna Best of Conneaut, Harold Best of Conneaut, sisters Mary Best of Conneaut and Carol Sharp of California, 14 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren and 1 due May 2019. Calling hours will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at the Raisian Family Funeral Home, 581 Harbor Street, Conneaut. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 Noon on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at St. Mary Church, 480 State Street, Conneaut with Father Philip Miller of Corpus Christi Parish officiating.
Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery, Conneaut where the American Legion Honor Squad will conduct military honors. Sandy and the family wish to thank Hospice of the Western Reserve for their compassion and loving care. We would also like to thank the Villa at the Lake and the Ashtabula County Nursing Home whose excellent care is much appreciated.
