Cobleskill- Lawrence H. Joyce, 84, of Jefferson Ave. , died Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at his residence with his loving family at his side. Born October 6, 1934 in Albany, he was the son of Harold D. and Mary (Heery) Joyce.
Larry was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1956 until 1958 when he received an honorable discharge. On September 12, 1959 he married Rose Marie Schultz and they resided in Latham and Guilderland before moving to Cobleskill. Larry taught history at Watervliet City School District High School from 1961 until 1966.
A well educated man, Larry received two Master degrees, one in sociology and the other in history. He was a professor for many years at SUNY Cobleskill, joining the faculty in 1966. He began this career as an assistant Professor of Economics and then moved into fulltime professor of Sociology and History.
In 2005, he retired but continued as an adjunct professor until 2012. From 1993 to 2005, Larry served as Dept. Chair for Social Sciences and later was a founding committee member and an instructor of various programs along with serving on the board of directors at S.C.H.O.O.L., (Schoharie Ongoing Learning).
A community minded individual, he served on Student/Faculty Judicial Board, Faculty Senate Committee, University Faculty Programs. He was the recipient of the United University Professions Award for Excellence in Teaching, SUNY Chancellor’s Award Excellence in Teaching, Honorary Alumni October 2011 SUNY Cobleskill, outstanding Academic Advisor. He was a communicant of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Cobleskill, where he was an active member serving on the Parish Council Formation Committee, Parish Council President, Chair of the Liturgy Committee, Chair of the New Church Building Committee, Lector, Facilitator of Scripture Study Group, Eucharistic Minister, and Pastoral Care at Cobleskill Regional Hospital.
His civic activities include President in 1978 and Founding Committee Member of Family and Community Services, served on Catholic Charities of Schoharie County as a Board Member and as Mediator Conflict Resolution of Montgomery Schoharie and Delaware County Catholic Charities, Past President and Citizen of the Year of Cobleskill Rotary, SCAAP Chairman of the Board from 1969 -1972, Town of Cobleskill Planning Board and Harassment Committee, Schoharie County Democratic Committee and Committeeman District #1, Iroquois Indian Museum as President of the Board and board member from 1993 to 2018, and appointed NYS Needs Task Group for Social Services. Left cherishing his memories are his wife, Rose Marie Joyce; three children: Maureen Ann Tissiere (Mark Cantrell) of Westerly, RI, Daniel (Mary Beth) Joyce of Averill Park, and Marybeth (David) Maurice of Rotterdam; five grandchildren: Daniel and Sean Tissiere, and Emily, Myles, and Owen Joyce. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10AM on Monday, February 18, 2019 at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 138 Washington Ave.
, Cobleskill. Family and friends are also invited to a period visitation to be held at the church on Sunday, February 17, 2019 from 2 to 5 PM. Burial with military honors will be held at 2PM on Monday at St. Agnes Cemetery, 48 Cemetery Ave.
