Leon Brooks, age 84, of Union Bridge, died Thursday, October 4, 2018 at the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, after a short illness. Born January 23, 1934 in Carroll County, he was the son of the late Fred L. Brooks Sr. and Anna Lucille Millberry Brooks. Leon graduated from Robert Moton High School in 1952.

He then attended and graduated from Bowie State Teachers College in 1958 with a degree in engineering. After college he served in the U.S. Army from 1958 through 1960. In… Read More » earlier years he was employed at the Brethren Service Center and 3M Fabrication.

He then went to work at Random House in Westminster as an engineer and retired in 1996. He enjoyed all sports, especially baseball and attending various sporting events for family and friends, listening to blues and jazz, and always read the newspaper, Afro-American paper and Jet magazines. He was the assistant manager of the Robert Moton basketball team in 1952.

He was involved with “The Blazers” (a local softball team) and managed “Gerald and the Groovers”. He was an avid artist who did many drawings for family and friends. He also did logos for automobiles for people in the community.

Surviving is sister, Dorothy I. “Muddy” Brown of New Windsor and he was the father figure to numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by many cousins and friends. He was predeceased by brothers, Fred L. Brooks Jr. and Charles E. Brooks.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, October 11, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge, followed by interment in Mt. Joy Cemetery, Uniontown. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, October 10.
