Leon’s Obituary On Friday, February 1, 2019, Captain Leon Stinson, age 80, departed this life. Captain Leon Stinson the son of the late Will C Stinson and Katie Frazier Stinson was born in Enterprise, Alabama on August 12, 1938. He was reared in Steubenville, Ohio.
He attended and completed his academic studies at Steubenville High School “Big Red” where he excelled in Track and Field. After graduating from high school, he served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps. Leon was a faithful member of Second Chance Ministries in Steubenville, Ohio.
Leon worked and retired from the Steubenville Police Department after serving a 33 year-long career. Through his law enforcement career, he progressed from Patrolman at the age of 27 in 1966 to the rank of Sergeant in 1979 and achieved the distinguished ranking of Captain in 1989. He was currently an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police.
Leon was very proud to serve his home town and took pride in his efforts to Protect and Serve the “Ville”. Leon was a very giving person. Any act of kindness shown to him was always rewarded.
He once said his strong family values, United States Marine Corps training, his brothers, and friends were a big influence in getting him into power-lifting. His first Olympic-Style competition was in 1960 in Cincinnati. Leon was nationally known as an elite weightlifter and he set numerous records in the deadlift racking up more than 100 awards.
He still holds records for the Police and Fire Games Olympics to this very day. Leon Stinson was preceded in death by his loving parents, the late Will C, and Katie Stinson; and two brothers, Rev. Willie F. Stinson and LaMarr Stinson.
He has left behind to cherish his memory his beloved children, Leon Stinson, Leonette (Keith) Murray, Dorisa Stinson, Rhonda (Andre) Stinson-Creech; and John Stinson all of Steubenville, Ohio, and Nicole (Charles) Sims of Weirton, WV; 22 Grandchildren; 23 Great- Grandchildren; 5 Great- Great Grandchildren; a brother, Floyd E. Stinson of Steubenville, Ohio; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He also leaves behind his favorite cousin, Nichola Torrence; his special life-long friends, Frank Blackwell, Leo Lanaghan, Guy Lamantia, Chaplain Shawn Scott, Walter Mallory, and Harvey Sanders; Joey Lamantia and Chester Bell who were like sons to him; many more friends and relatives that touched his life. Calling hours will be held from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 7, 2019, at Second Baptist Church, 717 Adams Street in Steubenville, Ohio.
A second visitation will follow on Friday, February 8, 2019, 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. at the church. Leon will be laid to rest at Union Cemetery immediately following his funeral services. Services entrusted to Gregory-Martin Funeral Home, LLC.
