Obituary for Leta W. Nicholson Leta Wyona Nicholson passed away Sunday, July 1, 2018 at the Chariton Specialty Care at the age of 100 years. Private family services are scheduled. Leta was born December 9, 1917 in Norwood, Iowa to Jasper and Laura Haltom Crooks.

She attended country school and graduated from Norwood High School then attended Simpson College. She taught at Puckerbrush School and was noted as one of the last active one-room schoolteacher in the state of Iowa when she retired. She was married to Marvin Nicholson on June 5, 1937 in Osceola, Iowa.

They were blessed with three children: J. Marion, Marilyn, and Cindy. They made their home in the Norwood Area where she was active in the Norwood Ladies Aide. She owned and operated a restaurant in Lacona for several years during the 1970’s where her tacos became famous.

She was an incredible cook; many also remember her amazing potato salad. She liked to work in the garden and raised chickens. Leta was quite the character, family remembers her telling scary tales to the grandchildren as bedtime stories or telling convincing stories of trolls living under rickety old bridges as they drove over.

She loved to play games with the family, but would never let anyone win even if she had to bend the rules in her favor. All the grandchildren went rock hunting and fishing in the creek whether they liked it or not. She was also a talented banjo player.

She made many great memories with her family who will greatly miss her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin in 1999; her parents: Jasper and Laura Crooks; her son, J. Marion Nicholson in 2013; and a sister, Leota Hukill. Leta will be greatly missed by her daughters: Marilyn (Gene) Marsh and Cindy (Monte) Hutchings; five grandchildren: Roxane Shreck, Wes Nicholson, Marty Marsh, Leah Habermehl, and Danielle Jorgenson; five great grandchildren: Ashley Stevens, Jennifer Neer, Shayla Pfrimmer, Jesse Thomas, and Jace Jorgenson; a great great grandson, Lucas Childress; daughter-in-law, Eva Nicholson; and many relatives and friends.
