Lewis Shamberger May 13, 1986 – December 21, 2018 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences Lewis Shamberger was born on May 13th, 1986 to Shirley Felder and Lewis Shamberger, Sr. Lewis was raised on 103rd Street and Central Park West by his mother and with the help of his late grandmother, Daisy Felder. During Lewis’s elementary school years, he attended P.S. 84 where he first embraced his natural acting skills. Going to Frederick Douglass Community Center for Saturday Program, Lewis made many friends.
Lewis participated in many sports in school and his community, but basketball became his favorite. Every Saturday he would meet with his tutor and play basketball afterwards. As Lewis entered middle school and joined the Goddard Riverside After-School Program, he performed in several shows.
He enjoyed life and his childhood. As he got older, Lewis started to develop his sense of style. He paid more attention as to how he presented himself.
He still would go to the sand park to do back flips, run through the projects playing manhunt, and play basketball until his sneakers were “cooked”. However, by the time Lewis entered high school he was very well-known in his neighborhood, popular in different areas of Manhattan, and had a unique style to match his bright smile. High school was the highlight of Lewis’s life.
He attended lunch every period, wrote Pretty Black on his work, and his teachers still graded it. He was so charming and smooth that they accepted it. High school allowed Lewis to grow into the strong loyal independent man that he was.
While helping care for his sick grandmother financially and still seek his education; high school is where Lewis met his first love that he ended up marrying years later. As Lewis’s life proceed in 2008 things change for the better and then some. As his oldest daughter Jia’Leah was just being born Lewis was sentenced to go away for a crime that he did not commit.
Lewis made some wise and some unfortunate decisions throughout his life. Always choosing loyalty over everything. While being incarcerated Lewis gained an enormous amount of respect for his name.
He furthered his education earning his Associate Degree and many trade certifications. In 2014, Lewis came home looking stocky and as handsome as he did when he left. Lewis later met his wife now and had another beautiful daughter named Journey.
Lewis’s main and only goals were to seek employment so he could be here for his children and family. What many people don’t know is Lewis had a well thought out plan. He wanted to continue his education in the counseling field so he could ultimately become a mentor to the youth growing up.
On Friday, December 21st, 2018, Lewis’s dreams were stolen and he transitioned home for being the stand up loyal man that he is. As black and white as it may sound but helping others caused him his life. Lewis will always be known as the man with the big smile that could light up any room.
He would bring joy and laughter to any event and was known as the star of the show. He was that big gentle giant as many of you would say. Lewis was also the protector of his love ones.
Many of us affectionately referred to him as Pretty Black because of the complexion of his skin. Pretty Black will be remembered in the hearts of many and throughout his community for the real man that he is. Lewis leaves to mourn: his wife, LaTisha; two beautiful daughters, Jia’Leah and Journey Shamberger; mother, Shirley; father, Lewis; his sister, Melody and niece, Samantha that he loved dearly; his aunt, Luchie; cousin, Damien; oldest cousin, Leslie; favorite girl cousin, Rita and her two sons, Reginald and Reality; aunt, Cookie; cousin, Starr; his aunt Sis cousins, Brandon, Ebony, James, Jimmia and Erick; Leair; best friend, Jamaine; Ericka; god brother, William; and a host of many many more friends.
