On March 3, 2019, Lloyd Stewart Hoekenga of Spring Lake left this earth to dwell with his Lord and Savior. He was born in Muskegon on January 29, 1928, the only child of Jacob and Louise (Fisher) Hoekenga. Lloyd began working after high school at Muskegon Bank & Trust and continued in that career for 45 years until retiring as a vice president of PNC Bank.

Lloyd was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean conflict. He was involved in many community organizations, including the Muskegon Christian Schools, Muskegon YMCA men’s group, the Salvation Army, and Habitat for Humanity. Lloyd loved sports, particularly Michigan Wolverines football and basketball games, and he was an enthusiastic golfer and ping pong player.

While living on Spring Lake, boating and family gatherings were favorite activities. His love for the church was evident from his many years of service, including as deacon and elder, at Immanuel Christian Reformed Church in Muskegon and for the past 37 years at Second Christian Reformed Church in Grand Haven, where he was also a member of the Endowment Committee for 30 years. Church also meant fellowship with friends, including a Monday morning group, weekly breakfasts with those he called his “younger friends” and “special five” lunches on Fridays.

In retirement, Lloyd and his wife Ione enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S. and to many countries. Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents; first wife and mother of his four children Ellen (Colsman) Hoekenga; and son Bryce. Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Ione; children Brad (April) Hoekenga of St. Louis, Brenda (Craig) DeYoung of Grand Rapids; Beth (Dave) Van Rees of Muskegon; step-children Laura (Paul) Bakker of Spring Lake, Donn (Robyn) Meindertsma of Fairfax, VA, Elisabeth (Ralph) Smeda of Alexandria, VA, and Mary (Jerriens) Bonnema of Grand Rapids; 18 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren, sisters and brothers in law, and many nieces and nephews.

Lloyd’s kindness, Christian walk, and gracious ways deeply influenced each member of his family, and he will be greatly missed. Services will be held 12:00 PM (Noon) Thursday, March 7, 2019 at Second Christian Reformed Church (2021 Sheldon Rd. Grand Haven, MI 49417).

Visitation will be 4-7 PM Wednesday, March 6, 2019 at The VanZantwick Chapel (620 Washington Ave, Grand Haven, MI 49417). Memorial Contributions in memory of Lloyd may be given to Second Christian Reformed Church Endowment Fund or Hospice of North Ottawa Community. Please sign the family’s online guestbook at www.
