Lottie Lorraine Cooper 1924-2019 Lottie Lorraine Cooper passed away at the home of her daughter in Fairfield Iowa on March 9th, at the age of 94. She was born July 6, 1924, at Fort Yates, North Dakota, an American Indian Reservation, where her parents, Ernest Elliott, and Hattie May Powell Elliott had come ashore while traveling by houseboat on the Missouri River from their homestead in Montana to the Elliott family farm in Flora, Illinois. She was raised there with her five siblings, Victor, Mildred, Elsie, Leonard, and Laddie.
In 1941, she married Kelly Paul Cooper and during the war years, they settled in LaPorte, Indiana, where he worked for 30 years at Allis Chalmers until retirement. She lived in the same house for 74 years, remaining after Kelly’s death in 1997. Together, they had raised three daughters and lots of beautiful flowers.
Lottie’s gardens were always an important part of her life, and her grandchildren all remember the beautiful flowers and picking and eating ripe raspberries from the bushes. She enjoyed collecting thimbles, and family sent them to her from all over the world. Lottie worked several years at Majerek’s Hall of Cards and Books.
Kelly passed away in 1997, and Lorraine stayed in the family home, with visits from family and friends, and weekday lunch with friendly card games at the Salvation Army. She relocated, several years ago, to Fairfield, Iowa living with her daughter, Rebecca Johnson. While there, she enjoyed daily walks and jigsaw puzzles with friends at the Fairfield Public Library.
She left this world March 9th peacefully and painlessly while playing a game of SkipBo with her daughter Rebecca. Lottie had three daughters, Karren Coplen, Rebecca Johnson, and the youngest, Linda Joseph, who preceded her in death. She had seven grandchildren, Kim Owens, Chris Saboski, Andy Saboski, Casper Huggins, Perri Huggins, Shawn Joseph and Amy Joseph, who is deceased, and seven great grandchildren.
She was the last of her family of siblings but was happy to be in contact with her huge family of nieces and nephews, whom she treasured. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 16, 2019, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, 1117 Indiana Avenue, La Porte, Indiana. A funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday following the visitation in the funeral home.
Captain Justin Windell will officiate. Burial will follow in Pine Lake cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Indiana Chapter 50 E 91st Street, Suite 100, Indianapolis, Indiana 46240.
