Family and friends will gather immediately after for a celebration of life. Louise chose to be laid to rest at a beautiful site she loved near Rocksprings, Texas.
Louise passed away January 29, 2019. Granny Lou, as she was affectionately known by her family, was born October 2, 1939, in Leesburg, Virginia to the late William and Mary Newberry. She was a loving, devoted, and cherished wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
Louise married the love of her life, Max Sims Hanks, in 1956. They met in Arlington, Virginia while working together at the Marriott Hot Shoppe shortly after Max returned from serving in the Korean War. Her husband’s forestry work led the family across the country from Virginia to Alabama and northern California before they finally settled in Lufkin, Texas in the early 70’s.
Louise was a wonderful homemaker and raising their four children brought her true joy. Granny Lou was immensely proud of her family and was excited to welcome each of her nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren (with 3 more on the way). Louise would tell anyone who asked how truly blessed her life was.
She was a woman of strong faith and believed resolutely in the power and strength of Jesus Christ’s love. She felt an immense connection to and adoration for the mountains and told her family to always remember our Heavenly Father who made them. Her generosity and kindness were treasured by all who knew her.
She loved to crochet and would gift her beautiful creations to family and friends. She never forgot a loved one’s birthday and whether it was through sweet letters, unique home-baked cakes, or shared collectible coins, she always made everyone feel special and prized. Her final years were spent peacefully at PineCrest Retirement Community, where she touched the lives of so many around her.
She lit up talking about the friends she’d made and how special she found each of them. She cared equally for the staff who showed her love and treated her like family. She will be missed dearly by all who knew and loved her.
Louise was preceded in death by her loving husband, Max Sims Hanks; parents William and Mary Newberry; and sisters, Mary Catherine Hortenbach, Kemp Dallas, and Sue Derrick. Louise is survived by her brother, William “Sonny” Newberry; sister, Virginia Bodmer; sons, Tom Hanks and wife Karen, Max Sims Hanks, Jr. (Tim) Hanks and wife Vickie; and daughters, Tammy Haney and husband Rocky, and Terry Windsor and husband Mike.
