OBITUARY Marcel Gerald Despres May 13, 1938 – July 19, 2018 Marcel G. “Mike” Despres, age 80, passed away Thursday, July 19, 2018 at his home in New Bedford. He was the wife of Jeanne (Bedard) Despres to whom he was married 59 years. Born in Acushnet a son of the late Gerald A. and Berthe L. (Poulin) Despres he was a longtime resident of the city.

A veteran of the Unites States Army National Guard he attended classes at Southeastern Massachusetts Technical Institute. He worked for Sunbeam Baking Company for 46 years, the last 20 as a foreman, retiring in 2002. A communicant of St. Joseph – St. Therese Church he was an avid golfer and a member of the Allendale and the Whaling City Country Clubs.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Douglas Despres of New Bedford; two daughters, Denise Dufour and her husband Jerry of Bristol, RI and Michelle Silva of Lakeville; one sister, Muriel J. Doherty; six grandchildren, Katelyn Lauzon and her husband Joe, Andrew Silva, Elise Augustine and her husband Zachary, Michael Silva, Reverend Phillip Dufour, and Harrison Silva; two great grandsons, Joey and Jacob Lauzon; several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Jeannine T. Young. His Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at 8:30 AM from Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd.

, New Bedford followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM in St. Joseph – St. Therese Church, Acushnet Ave. . , New Bedford.

Visiting hours are from 8:30 – 10:30 AM in the funeral home prior to the service. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery, New Bedford. Contributions in his honor may be made to The Jimmy Fund, 10 Brookline Place West, 6th Floor Brookline, MA 02445-7226.
